Ocho refugiados sirios se entregaron esta semana a autoridades de inmigración en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, dijeron el jueves funcionarios.

Su arribo e incertidumbre en torno a su futuro en Estados Unidos llega en un momento de agitación política acerca de los refugiados sirios luego de los letales atentados en París.

Dos familias -dos hombres, dos mujeres y cuatro niños- se presentaron el martes en el punto de entrada en la ciudad de Laredo, Texas, informó el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional en un comunicado. Los hombres fueron llevados a un centro de detención del Servicio de Control de Inmigración y Aduanas en Pearsall, y las mujeres y los niños a uno en Dilley.

El gobernador republicano Greg Abbott, quien junto con otros varios gobernadores del país ordenó recientemente a funcionarios estatales suspender la entrada de refugiados sirios después de los ataques mortales de la semana pasada en la capital francesa, tuiteó la noche del miércoles un vínculo cibernético para acceder al conservador sitio de internet Breitbart News Network, el cual reportó que los sirios habían sido “atrapados” en la frontera.

“Es por ESTO que Texas está vigilante respecto a los refugiados sirios”, escribió el gobernador.

El precandidato presidencial republicano Donald Trump continuó con el tema el jueves con su propio tuit: “¿El EI, quizá? Les dije. NECESITAMOS UN MURO GRANDE Y BONITO”, refiriéndose al grupo extremista Estado Islámico por sus siglas.

Cientos de miles de personas han huido de Siria para alejarse de la guerra civil, la mayoría de ellos a Europa. Para los sirios con recursos, un viaje más largo a la frontera estadounidense podría proporcionarles otro sendero al asilo.

Entre 2004 y 2013, aproximadamente 1.449 sirios recibieron asilo en Estados Unidos, en su mayoría en 2012 y 2013, y no fueron parte de los 70.000 refugiados de todo el mundo que acepta Estados Unidos anualmente.

El gobierno del presidente Barack Obama anunció anteriormente este año que la cifra de personas invitadas a mudarse a Estados Unidos como refugiados aumentaría a 85.000 en el siguiente año, incluidos aproximadamente 10.000 sirios. El programa está ahora bajo escrutinio, y la Cámara de Representantes aprobó el jueves de manera abrumadora una legislación impulsada por el Partido Republicano que pone nuevos obstáculos a refugiados sirios e iraquíes que tratan de venir a Estados Unidos.

Durante años, la gente ha tratado de ingresar a Estados Unidos a través de la frontera mexicana. Más de 145.000 personas de naciones diferentes a México fueron arrestadas en la frontera entre ambas naciones durante el año presupuestal 2015 que terminó el 30 de septiembre. La inmensa mayoría eran de Centroamérica.
