Crime in Mexico: Homicides continue to rise in the first month of 2023

PUERTO VALLARTA PVDN: Crime in Mexico during the month of January 2023, 74 people were murdered daily in Mexico, exceeding the daily averages for December (73) and November (69) last year in preliminary figures.

Last month, 2,303 victims of intentional homicide were registered, which represents an increase of 1.1 percent compared to the 2,277 of December 2022, according to the report of the daily count of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).

Guanajuato started the year in first place with the most intentional deaths in absolute numbers, with 249 during January.

They are followed by the State of Mexico, which will have elections this year, with 238; Baja California, 165; Michoacan, 146; Zacatecas, 145; Jalisco, 150; Chihuahua, 144; Warrior, 129; Nuevo Leon, 106; Veracruz, 93.

The month of January ended yesterday with 67 murders, the majority in Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Jalisco.

Last Sunday, 108 victims of intentional homicide were registered, the second-highest number of murders in the month; the first was on Saturday, January 7, with 109.

Crime in Mexico the worst start of the year

The period from January 1 to 13, 2019 is the worst start to the year in terms of homicidal violence, with 1,027 victims of intentional homicide, according to preliminary figures from the daily count of this common law crime prepared by the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), from the investigation folders opened by state prosecutors or attorneys.

The state with the most murders on January 1 and 2 is Chihuahua, with 34, the highest number for an entity in two days, according to the history of homicides.

The year of crime in Mexico began with a riot in the Ciudad Juárez prison, Chihuahua, which left 17 dead, of whom 10 were guards and seven inmates.
