Following a deadly explosion in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco, last Tuesday, July 11, which claimed six lives and left 14 injured, the Mexican government has swiftly responded. As per a report from the Fifteenth Military Zone, 350 members of the Mexican Army have been dispatched to the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. Their mission is to bolster local law enforcement and help stem the rising tide of crime plaguing the region.
These troops, part of the Joint Task Force, are well-known for their mobility, flexibility, and impressive arsenal of weapons, equipment, and specialized training. Their deployment typically follows a significant violent event, marking this incident as one of severe magnitude.
This is not the first such dispatch in recent times. On May 28, 1,100 military personnel were deployed to Jalisco following the disappearance and subsequent death of eight call center workers from Colonia Jardines Vallarta and La Estancia, Zapopan. Their mutilated bodies were later discovered in the ravine of the Mirador Escondido neighborhood.
In December 2022, another notable deployment occurred following the disappearance of Colonel José Isidro Grimaldo Muñoz in Tapalpa, bringing 2,000 troops to the area.
Data from Sedena show the current force state across all government levels in Jalisco encompasses 33,063 operational elements. Of these, 20,449 are state and municipal troops, 5,638 are from the Mexican Army, 440 from the Navy, and 6,536 from the National Guard.
The recent explosion, triggered by remote-controlled devices, resulted in the death of four officers – three from the State Prosecutor’s Office and one from the Municipal Police Station. Among the 14 injured, seven remain in the hospital, and two are in critical condition.
These critically injured patients, both 19-year-old males, are being treated at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara. One patient has suffered severe eye injuries and has practically lost an eye. Both are currently intubated, with one showing positive signs of recovery.
The explosion occurred after police responded to an anonymous tip-off about potential human remains at Cerro de las Latillas. While the area was being inspected, eight explosive devices were detonated, resulting in this tragic incident.
This has led to a temporary suspension of searches based on anonymous tips. However, Governor Enrique Alfaro has stated that these will not be permanently halted. He proposed creating dialogue tables with families of disappeared persons and their groups to review protocols, ensuring they are properly addressed.
Search organizations are now urging for a reassessment of risk analysis criteria and a reinforcement of protocols prior to operations to prevent similar tragedies.
