PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The National Meteorological Service (SMN), an official body of the Mexican Government overseeing climate affairs, has reported that Hurricane “Jova” has intensified to a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. “Jova” is currently churning over the Pacific Ocean, safely distanced from the Mexican coastline.
However, the influence of Hurricane “Jova” is anticipated to increase the likelihood of heavy rainfall in areas like Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, and the southern parts of Sinaloa. Baja California Sur could experience rainfall with intermittent showers and strong to severe wind gusts and high waves along its shores.
Current data reveals that the storm is located 455 km southwest of Isla Socorro, Colima, and 855 km southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. The hurricane boasts formidable maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 315 km/h.
The extensive ” Jova ” cloud bands are expected to increase the probability of occasional heavy downpours in regions like Nayarit and Sinaloa and more localized intense rains in Colima and Jalisco. Moreover, areas of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, and southern Sinaloa are anticipated to experience wind gusts ranging from 40 to 60 km/h, accompanied by waves surging to heights between 2 to 4 meters. These conditions are predicted to extend toward the coast of Baja California Sur in the coming hours.
Current projections indicate that “Jova” will maintain its Category 5 intensity until tomorrow. It will likely be downgraded to Category 4 and positioned 860 km west of Isla Socorro, Colima, and 990 km southwest of Cabo San Lázaro, Baja California Sur.
Given the potential impacts of the hurricane, authorities are urging residents of the mentioned states to exercise extreme caution. This includes considerations for rain, wind, and maritime conditions. The public is also advised to heed the recommendations disseminated by the National Civil Protection System authorities in their respective regions.
