Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Eighth Health Region of the Ministry of Health in Jalisco, led by Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas, has issued a warning about the potential collapse of hospitals in the region due to a rapidly growing dengue epidemic.
According to the latest figures released earlier this month, Jalisco has recorded a total of 4,829 dengue cases. Of these, 3,112 are classified as traditional or non-severe dengue. Additionally, 1,566 cases exhibit warning signs, and 151 cases have progressed to severe dengue. To date, the outbreak has claimed one life.
Dr. Álvarez Zayas emphasized the strain that a massive influx of patients can place on healthcare facilities. “Any hospital can collapse if it is overwhelmed by the massive arrival of patients, as occurs in serious emergencies, such as accidents with multiple victims,” he stated.
The risk is particularly high with dengue, as complicated cases require immediate and intensive medical attention, potentially disrupting the daily operations of hospitals. While Dr. Álvarez Zayas did not specify the total number of beds available in Puerto Vallarta, he assured that local health services are prepared to handle a serious eventuality.
What Is Dengue and What Are Its Symptoms?
Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which thrives in warm and humid climates like those of Puerto Vallarta. Common symptoms include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain. In severe cases, patients may develop dengue hemorrhagic fever, necessitating urgent hospitalization.
Preventive Measures Urged by Authorities
In response to the health alert, authorities are reiterating the importance of preventive actions to halt the spread of the mosquito responsible for transmitting the virus. Residents are urged to:
- Wash: Clean containers such as buckets, water tanks, and other water reservoirs that can serve as mosquito breeding sites.
- Cover: Ensure containers and water reservoirs are sealed to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.
- Turn Over: Remove or invert objects that can collect water, including bottles, flower pots, and tires.
- Clean: Maintain rooftops, patios, and gardens to eliminate potential breeding grounds.
Health authorities are calling on the community to stay vigilant and actively participate in these preventive measures. By doing so, the population can reduce the risk of infection and help ease the burden on local hospitals.
As dengue cases continue to rise, the collaborative effort between health officials and the public is crucial to managing the outbreak and safeguarding the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
