Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco — In a milestone effort to strengthen environmental stewardship and promote sustainable tourism, Playa de Oro is poised to become the first certified beach under the current municipal administration, led by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González. With the certification process in its final stages, local officials and community members are joining forces to ensure the beach meets the required standards for cleanliness and ecological balance.
The initiative is headed by Councilman Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal, president of the City Council Commission for Free, Clean, and Certified Beaches. Since the start of this administration, Bravo Carbajal has overseen intensive clean-up campaigns targeting beaches, rivers, and streams throughout the region. These efforts aim to reduce by up to 70% the waste that ends up in the sea.
According to Bravo Carbajal, a total of 12 clean-up events have taken place so far, rallying the support of approximately 1,600 volunteers. In total, more than 100 tons of garbage have been collected during these campaigns. The councilman emphasized that this community involvement is crucial, noting, “A clean city is not one that collects the most trash, but one in which less waste is generated.”
Meanwhile, Jonathan Nacar Muñoz, supervisor of ecology, confirmed that Playa de Oro’s certification audit is scheduled for next week. Experts from the Mexican Institute of Standardization and Certification will evaluate several key criteria, including water quality, environmental infrastructure, and proper waste management practices.
In a final push for a successful certification, the community is encouraged to participate in a clean-up campaign at Playa de Oro on March 8, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Volunteers will work alongside hoteliers, beach vendors, and local officials in what is expected to be the last major clean-up before certification. Organizers hope the campaign not only meets certification standards but also fosters greater awareness about the importance of preserving beaches and reducing waste at its source.
