Ajijic, Jalisco, June 13, 2026 – Chapala’s municipal government and U.S. diplomatic representatives gathered on Wednesday, June 10, at Centro Cultural de Ajijic for an intercultural event tied to the United States’ 250th Independence Day anniversary.
The event drew local authorities, U.S. and Canadian residents, and alumni of academic exchange programs. Chapala’s government and AMEB Occidente organized the gathering.
A foreign-resident town gets diplomatic attention
Ajijic was a fitting place for the event. The town of Lake Chapala has one of western Mexico’s most established U.S. and Canadian communities, with retirees, seasonal residents, property owners, and local civic groups woven into daily life.
A Jalisco state demographic analysis, based on INEGI’s 2020 census, put Ajijic’s resident population at 11,439. Adults made up 75 percent of that population.
That count does not fully show the presence of part-year foreign residents. Academic work on retirement migration in the Guadalajara-Lake Chapala region notes that government statistics remain limited for measuring foreign residents in Ajijic, Chapala, and nearby communities.

Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre Curiel said the event recognized the U.S. consulate and people connected to U.S.-linked academic programs. A public-media report quoted him saying the gathering reflected “the closeness” the consulate has maintained with Chapala’s delegations.
U.S. Consul General Amy Scanlon, based in Guadalajara, described exchange-program alumni as “one of the strongest bridges between our countries.” She also linked the anniversary event to education, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.
The broader anniversary falls on July 4, 2026, when the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America250, the congressionally authorized national organization, has tied the anniversary to civic participation, volunteer service, and public events across the United States.
The Puerto Vallarta link
The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara is the main U.S. diplomatic post for this part of western Mexico. The U.S. mission also lists a Puerto Vallarta Consular Agency that provides emergency services for U.S. citizens in Puerto Vallarta and the Nuevo Vallarta/Bahía de Banderas area.
That network is important when consular issues involve safety alerts, emergency documents, outreach to foreign residents, or large public events. It links Ajijic, Chapala, Puerto Vallarta, and Riviera Nayarit through the same regional diplomatic structure.
There is also a 2026 planning angle. Mexico, the United States, and Canada are jointly hosting the World Cup. Jalisco officials have already framed consular cooperation around visitors, mobility, and regional coordination ahead of the tournament.
