Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 17, 2026 – A finished section of the Avenida México expansion in Ixtapa remains closed more than three weeks after work was reportedly completed, leaving drivers without access to lanes built to ease north-side traffic. The closed stretch runs between Avenida Federación and the access area to Fraccionamiento Pacífico Azul.
Rocks and barrels still block vehicles from using the new section. The closure affects a corridor used by students, public transport riders, and commuters moving between Ixtapa, Mojoneras, El Pitillal, and central Puerto Vallarta.
The area serves several high-traffic destinations, including the Centro Universitario de la Costa on Avenida Universidad and Conalep Puerto Vallarta II on Federación.
A project meant to relieve daily congestion
The Avenida México expansion was promoted as a mobility project for the Ixtapa-Mojoneras corridor. PVDN previously reported on the city’s plan to widen Avenida México to four lanes to reduce delays for residents traveling to work, school, and services in the northern part of the municipality.
Municipal contract records reviewed by PVDN show a paving contract, DIOP/CSS/44/2025, for hydraulic concrete work on Avenida México. The work covered the section from Avenida Federación to the entrance of Pacífico Azul in Ixtapa.
The contract amount was 12,949,124.50 pesos, including VAT. The listed work period ran from November 6, 2025, to February 3, 2026.
A separate municipal contract, DIOP/AD/43/2025, covered installations on Avenida México from Avenida Pacífico Azul to the end of Fraccionamiento Pacífico Azul. That contract was assigned to Construcciones Yampai de Occidente for about 1.3 million pesos, with FAISMUN funds listed as the source.
In early May, authorities described the Avenida México work as nearly ready to open. At the time, the project was pending the final installation of urban equipment and bus stops.
No public explanation for the delay
PVDN found no public municipal notice explaining why the completed section remained closed as of June 17. It remains unclear whether the city is waiting for inspection, signage, bus-stop work, drainage approval, formal delivery, or another step before opening the lanes.
The delay continues to put pressure on Avenida Federación, Avenida Universidad, Pacífico Azul, and nearby approaches to Ixtapa. The busiest periods are likely to be morning school entry, afternoon pickup, and the evening commute.
The corridor has already seen months of disruption. In late December, the México-Universidad de Guadalajara intersection near CUC closed for paving and hydraulic installation work, with drivers redirected via Carretera Estatal 544, according to traffic reports from that closure.
Drivers heading to CUC, Conalep Puerto Vallarta II, Pacífico Azul, or Mojoneras should continue planning extra time through the area until the new lanes open.
