Carlotta Becomes the First Hurricane of the Pacific Season

As of 8:00 AM PDT (1500 UTC), Hurricane Carlotta has been officially designated as the first hurricane of the Pacific season. The center of Hurricane Carlotta is located near latitude 18.6 North, longitude 115.2 West. The storm is moving in a west-northwest direction at approximately 14 mph (22 km/h). This west-northwestward trajectory is expected to continue with a gradual decrease in speed over the next several days.

Carlotta has strengthened with maximum sustained winds reaching near 80 mph (130 km/h), accompanied by higher gusts. Meteorologists predict additional strengthening within the next 24 hours, followed by a period of weakening anticipated early next week.

The hurricane’s influence extends outward significantly, with hurricane-force winds reaching up to 10 miles (20 km) from its center and tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 80 miles (130 km). Notably, a Mexican Navy automated station on Isla Clarion has already recorded sustained winds of 55 mph (86 km/h) and a gust reaching 81 mph (130 km/h).

The estimated minimum central pressure of the hurricane stands at 983 mb (29.03 inches). Earlier measurements from the Mexican Navy’s automated station on Isla Clarion reported a minimum pressure of 986 mb (29.11 inches).

Hazards Affecting Land

Swells generated by Hurricane Carlotta are impacting the coastal regions of west-central mainland Mexico and the southern Baja California peninsula. These swells are expected to create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions that will persist through Sunday. Residents and visitors in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and heed warnings from local weather offices to ensure their safety.

Authorities in affected regions are urging residents to prepare for potential impacts associated with Hurricane Carlotta, including high surf, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. Emergency services are on alert to respond to any arising situations, and the public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates and safety instructions.
