Comondú homicides 2025

Comondú homicides 2025 now lead Baja California Sur

Comondú has moved to the top of Baja California Sur’s homicide tally in 2025 after a sharp two-week flare-up of gun violence. Official figures reviewed by local press show at least 26 homicide victims so far this year in the municipality, pushing it past larger neighbors and forcing a statewide security rethink. This report verifies the numbers against state and federal data releases, traces where the spike has occurred—specifically, in Puerto San Carlos and Ciudad Constitución—and details how state authorities plan to respond in the coming weeks.

Comondú is now the homicide hotspot of Baja California Sur in 2025. Local authorities and reporters say a two-week burst of armed attacks tipped the municipality to the top of the state’s homicide count this year. Comondú homicides in 2025 are being closely watched after at least 26 victims so far, most tied to recent shootings.

The immediate flashpoints are familiar names to residents: Puerto San Carlos and Ciudad Constitución. On Wednesday, August 27, investigators opened a case after a man was found shot dead in Puerto San Carlos. It followed other incidents that have heightened local fear and strained patrols.

State officials have acknowledged the pattern. Governor Víctor Castro said he would seek federal reinforcement specifically for Comondú and neighboring Loreto after a string of shootings, including an attempted homicide on August 19 in Puerto San Carlos.

What the numbers say statewide

Baja California Sur’s trend of lethal violence has turned upward in 2025. From January through July, the state registered 66 homicide victims—almost double the 34 recorded in the same period of 2024. July alone brought 25 homicide cases, 16 of them intentional, according to the latest breakdowns derived from national crime statistics.

That jump helps explain why Comondú’s cluster stands out: it is happening in a relatively small municipality. Comondú had approximately 73,000 residents as of the 2020 census. With 26 homicide victims so far this year, the city is already tracking at roughly 35 per 100,000 residents—a high rate for a place that, until recently, was not the state’s epicenter for gun violence. (This is a year-to-date approximation, not a full-year rate.)

Security response and why Comondú stands out

Authorities say they are shifting resources. In June, the state announced a joint deployment of more than 250 federal troops across the Comondú-Loreto corridor—about 135 to Comondú—and the governor has since reiterated plans to ask Mexico’s Security Ministry for additional, specialized support. The state’s security cabinet has also convened in Comondú to recalibrate patrols and intelligence work.

The surge is not occurring in isolation. In late August, local search collectives and authorities reported seven clandestine graves found in La Paz and Comondú within days, deepening anxiety for families of the missing and feeding pressure on prosecutors and the state police to show progress.

What residents should know

Travel risk messaging has shifted to a higher tone, although Baja California Sur remains at a U.S. State Department Level 2—exercise increased caution. For locals and visitors, that means paying attention to official advisories, avoiding active police scenes, and expecting occasional checkpoints while joint patrols expand in the state’s north-central corridor.

For the numbers ahead, the federal crime database maintained by Mexico’s National Public Security Secretariat (SESNSP) will be key. Monthly municipal updates are the best way to verify whether Comondú’s lead endures or ebbs as deployments take hold. We will continue to track those releases and local case reports to verify official claims.
