Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 20, 2026 – Federal forces detained 10 people during coordinated searches in Tepic and Xalisco, including a man identified by security officials as an alleged regional operator for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
José Guadalupe Ahumada Villegas, known as “M4,” was the most prominent suspect named after seven court-authorized searches carried out Sunday in the two neighboring Nayarit municipalities. Federal officials described him as a coordinator of criminal activity in Nayarit and Tlaxcala.
Some reports have presented Ahumada Villegas as a successor to Audias Flores Silva, alias “El Jardinero,” who was captured in Nayarit in April. The federal account released after Sunday’s raids, however, did not identify “M4” as Flores Silva’s replacement or place him within the cartel’s national leadership.
The searches followed surveillance and intelligence work that identified properties allegedly used by the criminal organization. The Navy conducted the operation with the Federal Attorney General’s Office and the federal Security and Citizen Protection Secretariat.
Authorities reported seizing three rifles, three vehicles and multiple mobile phones. The total value of the property secured during the operation was estimated at more than 4 million pesos. The buildings were sealed while investigators continued processing evidence.
Federal officials linked the suspected cell broadly to homicide, kidnapping, extortion, retail drug sales, cargo theft, weapons trafficking and the illegal extraction and sale of fuel. They did not specify which allegation applied to each of the 10 detainees or disclose the names of the other nine people taken into custody.
The suspects and seized property were transferred to the federal Public Ministry, which will determine what charges can be presented. An arrest announcement does not establish guilt, and authorities had not announced a judicial ruling or formal order binding the suspects over for trial as of Monday morning.
Sunday’s operation adds another layer to the federal campaign against CJNG structures in Nayarit following the April 27 detention of “El Jardinero.” That earlier operation followed 19 months of surveillance and ended with Flores Silva’s capture near the community of El Mirador. He had been identified as a high-priority target in Mexico and the United States.
The April arrest was followed by vehicle fires, roadblocks and temporary transportation disruptions in parts of Nayarit. Puerto Vallarta remained largely calm as security forces concentrated on highways and the state boundary, as detailed in Vallarta Daily’s reporting on the arrest and its regional impact.
The latest searches were reported in the Tepic-Xalisco metropolitan area, inland from Bahía de Banderas. The federal statement did not report operations in Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías or other communities along the bay, nor did it announce road closures, airport impacts or restrictions affecting the coastal tourism corridor.
The legal proceedings will provide a clearer measure of the operation’s significance. Officials have not released the precise locations of the seven properties, the criminal cases supporting the searches, the identities of the remaining detainees or evidence confirming claims that “M4” had inherited control of operations previously attributed to “El Jardinero.”
