A judge in the State of Mexico sentenced a former Chimalhuacán police officer to 70 years behind bars for the femicide of his partner in Puerto Vallarta. The attacker, identified as Jorge N, will also pay a 96,220‑peso fine and 874,340 pesos in damages.
Between the night of October 3 and the early hours of October 4, 2022, Jorge N and his partner traveled to the Mojoneras neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta on vacation. According to the Regional Investigations Deputy Prosecutor’s Office, Jorge N violently attacked his partner, causing fatal injuries. After a thorough probe, prosecutors charged him with femicide under state law.
At a hearing this week, the judge found Jorge N guilty and imposed the maximum prison term under the current legal framework. The 70‑year sentence reflects both the gravity of the offense and the State Attorney General’s Office push to apply tougher penalties in gender‑based murders.
In addition to the prison term, the court ordered a fine of 96,220 pesos and civil damages of 874,340 pesos. Authorities explained the fine covers procedural costs and serves as a further deterrent. The damages award aims to compensate the victim’s family for funeral expenses and emotional suffering.
The State Attorney General’s Office (FE) highlighted this ruling as part of its broader effort to curb violence against women. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute every act of gender violence to the fullest extent of the law,” said a spokesperson for the FE. The office emphasized its commitment to protecting women and ensuring justice in cases of femicide.
Mexico registers one of the highest rates of femicide in Latin America. In 2024 alone, authorities reported over 1,000 confirmed femicides nationwide. Experts link the trend to entrenched gender discrimination and insufficient local enforcement. Recent reforms increased penalties and streamlined investigations, but advocates say more resources are needed at the municipal level.
Puerto Vallarta, a major tourist destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast, has seen rising concerns about public safety in recent years.
