Five Puerto Vallarta Beach Zones Closed to Swimming

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 27, 2026 – Swimming was prohibited Wednesday at five monitored beach zones after municipal lifeguards paired red and purple flags at two river outlets and three locations along the northern shoreline.

The August 26 beach report placed the dual warning at the Río Cuale outlet, the Río Pitillal outlet beside Playa Holi, Playa Westin Regina, Playa Marriott, and Playa Boca Negra.

A red flag means conditions are dangerous and recreational entry into the water is prohibited. A purple flag warns of potentially dangerous marine wildlife. The municipal report did not identify a species.

The warning did not extend across the city’s entire coastline. Yellow flags remained at Playa Palmares, Los Muertos, Burros, Camarones South, Camarones North, and Playa de Oro. Yellow permits water entry with caution and under lifeguard instructions.

The reported surf measured approximately 0.60 meters. That relatively modest wave height did not change the red restrictions at the five higher-risk zones. Beach flags reflect the combined conditions observed at each location rather than wave height alone.

Wednesday’s closures followed a familiar geographic pattern. Two warnings covered places where rivers meet the bay, while three covered the Marina Vallarta and northern hotel corridor. The same two-river-mouth and Marina corridor pattern appeared in a July 27 closure report.

Civil Protection issued Wednesday’s list during its Turn C lifeguard shift, making it a daily snapshot rather than a permanent designation. Anyone returning to the coast Thursday should rely on the flag currently posted at that access point and instructions from lifeguards. A red flag still means remain out of the water even when a nearby beach carries yellow.
