PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — The city’s Civil Protection and Fire Department has announced the closure of four local beaches for recreational use, citing high waves and strong backwash. Red flags now fly at Palmares Beach, Punta Negra, Burros Beach, and the beachfront near Hotel Rosita, warning visitors and residents alike to stay out of the water until further notice.
Authorities have urged the public to observe posted warnings and follow the instructions of lifeguards on duty. “We invite the public and visitors to respect the red flag and follow the instructions of the lifeguards,” the municipal agency stated, emphasizing that conditions in the water are currently unsafe.
According to Víctor Manuel Cornejo López, meteorologist advisor to the Scientific Committee for Civil Protection of the Bay Area, the high surf is related to extratropical cyclones that have impacted the California region. Over time, the resulting wave activity has traveled southward, reaching Mexico’s Central Pacific coast and causing the dangerous conditions now observed in Puerto Vallarta.
Local officials are closely monitoring the situation and will update the public when it is safe to return to the affected beaches. In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to seek alternative recreational activities and remain cautious around oceanfront areas until the restrictions are lifted.
