Christian Preciado Cázares, the director of Municipal Tourism, acknowledged that while the tourist and downtown areas are less affected, the city’s overall garbage management issues pose significant challenges.
Residents have voiced concerns about accumulating garbage across various neighborhoods, as reported by state media outlet El Informador in its recent article, “The Mountains of Garbage That Grow in Vallarta Far from the Tourist Eye.” This situation has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among citizens and raised questions about its impact on Puerto Vallarta’s image as a prime tourist destination.
When questioned about the potential effect of garbage accumulation on the city’s reputation, Preciado Cázares emphasized that waste collection in the central and tourist areas is conducted three times daily. However, he conceded that there are persistent issues in Puerto Vallarta’s residential neighborhoods, with some reports of inadequate collection services in the central colonies.
Preciado Cázares stressed the importance of communication with local residents and businesses in the downtown and tourist districts. He urged them to adhere to the designated collection schedules for each route to prevent solid waste from being left outside at inappropriate times. This measure is crucial to maintaining cleanliness and minimizing the visual and environmental impact of uncollected garbage.
The director also warned that the anticipated rains could exacerbate the situation, as malfunctioning garbage trucks might struggle to meet collection demands. The combination of mechanical breakdowns and heavy rainfall could lead to garbage being swept onto public roads, resulting in blockages and flooding.
Efforts are being made to address these challenges, including maintaining open lines of communication with the community and emphasizing the importance of following established waste disposal protocols.
