Despite municipal assurances of more frequent collection during the height of the holiday season, social media images and resident complaints highlight uncollected refuse obstructing streets and public spaces.
According to reports from local residents, the garbage piles are particularly evident in the El Cerro neighborhood, the Romantic Zone, and the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. These are focal points for visitors, who often walk through these areas, further intensifying concerns regarding the city’s public image and sanitation measures.
City authorities previously announced that waste collection services would be provided daily during the final week of 2024 and the first week of 2025. However, the situation continues to strain Puerto Vallarta’s resources, as large quantities of garbage remain on sidewalks and in residential districts. Although the municipal government granted a concession to a private company for collection, transfer, treatment, and final disposal of waste shortly after the current administration took office, the system has not yielded the anticipated improvements.
Local residents point out that this challenge has been inherited, noting that the prior administration experienced consistent troubles managing waste. Now, with tens of thousands of tourists vacationing in the city amid the high season, many fear that Puerto Vallarta’s reputation could be adversely affected if a prompt and effective solution is not implemented.
Observers say swift action is required to address the accumulation of garbage on streets and ensure that the popular tourism destination maintains a clean environment for both visitors and residents. Municipal authorities have yet to announce any further measures or revised protocols to manage the situation beyond their initial statements regarding daily collection during the holiday period.
