Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 12, 2026 – Crews continued work Friday on Federal Highway 200 after a rock-and-soil slide blocked part of the road between Las Juntas y Los Veranos and Boca de Tomatlán, south of Puerto Vallarta.
Cabo Corrientes authorities said one lane had been reopened for controlled traffic while crews waited for heavy machinery to remove larger rocks. Drivers should expect delays and possible temporary closures during the cleanup.
The slide was reported near kilometer 194, on a coastal highway segment used by residents, workers, tour operators, and visitors traveling between Puerto Vallarta, Boca de Tomatlán, and communities farther south.
One lane open, but the slope remains a concern
The first reports described rocks, soil, and debris on the pavement, with both lanes affected in places. Emergency crews later opened a provisional passage while Protección Civil personnel controlled traffic through the area.
A later local road update said the passage was open to all vehicle types, but under supervision. The same report warned that the slope had not been fully stabilized and that more material could fall.
An earlier emergency report said the first provisional passage was limited to smaller vehicles while heavy machinery was being arranged.
This is the southern Las Juntas
The location can cause confusion for drivers. This is Las Juntas y Los Veranos, on the southern Highway 200 corridor, not the Las Juntas area near the Puerto Vallarta airport.
For drivers leaving Puerto Vallarta, the affected stretch is beyond Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán, on the road toward Cabo Corrientes and the South Coast. Anyone heading to Boca, nearby beach routes, or farther south toward El Tuito should allow extra time.
PVDN reviewed the reports available on Friday and did not find an official notice confirming that normal two-way traffic had resumed.
Crash reported near the same stretch
A separate Friday report said a sedan crashed near kilometer 193 on the Las Juntas y Los Veranos-Boca de Tomatlán stretch, struck a rock wall, and caught fire. Two occupants were reported with minor injuries and were treated by Army medical personnel.
Authorities did not report a direct link between the crash and the landslide. The incident is relevant because it occurred near the same stretch of road while emergency crews were already working in the area.
Rain may keep conditions changing
The cleanup comes as seasonal rain begins to affect mountain roads around Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes. Mexico’s weather service forecast very heavy to heavy rain for parts of western and central Jalisco on Friday, and Puerto Vallarta had clouds and rain in the forecast. (smn.conagua.gob.mx)
Drivers using Federal Highway 200 should slow down near fresh slide material, avoid stopping cut slopes below, and follow instructions from Protección Civil, the Army, and road personnel. Short closures may be ordered while machinery works on the pavement.
