Man Rescued From Río Cuale After Rain Swells River

Man Rescued From Río Cuale After Rain Swells River

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 15, 2026 – A 44-year-old man was rescued from the Río Cuale near El Caloso early Monday after he tried to cross the river and became trapped on a rock as the water rose.

Puerto Vallarta Protección Civil and Bomberos crews reached the man, brought him back to shore, and had paramedics check him afterward. No serious injuries or hospital transfer were reported.

The rescue happened near the bridge in Colonia El Caloso, upriver from Isla Cuale and Puerto Vallarta’s downtown riverwalk. The man’s name and the exact time of the rescue had not been released publicly by Monday morning.

River rescue in El Caloso

The man entered the Río Cuale after recent rains had raised the water level in the channel, according to the report. As he crossed, the current became strong enough that he stopped on a rock and could not safely reach either bank.

The rescue required crews to work in darkness and moving water, two conditions that raise the risk for residents who use riverbeds, low crossings, or back roads after rain.

PVDN reviewed Monday morning’s official weather bulletin from the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. The 6 a.m. forecast placed the highest risk of rain in Jalisco, mainly in the state’s north and northeast. It also warned that storm rainfall can raise river and stream levels, cause flooding, and reduce visibility.

For Puerto Vallarta, the risk does not depend only on rain falling over the city. The Cuale-Pitillal basin includes Puerto Vallarta, Talpa de Allende, Mascota, and Cabo Corrientes, according to Jalisco’s water commission. Rain in the mountains can move downstream into local channels as conditions improve near the coast.

Rainy-season river crossings

Puerto Vallarta Protección Civil has been warning residents during the start of the rainy season to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and flooded areas when storms develop near the mountains. The agency has also urged residents to monitor official notices when rain is in the forecast.

For people who live near the Cuale, Pitillal, Ameca, or smaller arroyos, moving water can hide loose rock, a deeper channel, debris, or a stronger current below the surface.

The Río Cuale has caused serious damage before. During Hurricane Nora in 2021, PVDN reported that the river overflowed, damaging parts of downtown Puerto Vallarta, including riverfront infrastructure.

Monday’s rescue was not a hurricane event. It was an early rainy-season rescue in a familiar trouble spot, after water rose enough to trap a man who tried to cross.

Residents and visitors can follow PVDN’s Puerto Vallarta weather coverage for daily planning during the rainy season, including rain timing, street flooding risks, and storm conditions that affect roads, beaches, and neighborhoods.

Puerto Vallarta Protección Civil lists 911 for emergencies and 322 178 8000 for its administrative line. Anyone who sees a person trapped by rising water should call emergency services rather than attempt a rescue from the bank.
