Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit, August 3, 2026 – The Mexican Navy confirmed that a sailor was wounded and an alleged attacker was killed after armed men opened fire on naval personnel conducting a ground patrol in Aguamilpa.
The Navy confirmation said the personnel responded to the attack, leading to an armed exchange in the mountainous community. One firearm, magazines, and ammunition were secured and placed under the authority of the federal prosecutor handling the investigation.
The confrontation occurred during the early hours of Sunday, August 2, after security forces had been conducting patrols in the Aguamilpa area. The operation involved the Navy, Nayarit State Police, and Bahía de Banderas municipal police.
Nayarit Public Security Secretary Manasés Langarica Verdín later reported that the wider operation resulted in the seizure of three firearms, four vehicles, and a property allegedly used by the man who died during the exchange.
The state security official said security forces would maintain a presence in Aguamilpa after the confrontation. The operation also involved investigative and forensic personnel who processed the scene and gathered evidence for the case.
The security deployment came as Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero visited Aguamilpa to begin construction of the La Ceiba vehicle bridge. The project carries an investment of 6.5 million pesos and is intended to improve the community’s connection during the rainy season, when rising water can disrupt travel.
During the visit, state officials also announced that the State Security Council would hold a meeting in the region in the coming days. The meeting is expected to focus on coordination among federal, state, and municipal agencies operating in the Sierra de Vallejo area.
