Marina Vallarta Golf Course Defends Tree Removal Plan

Marina Vallarta Golf Course Defends Tree Removal Plan

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, October 16, 2026 — Marina Vallarta golf course management defended tree removals in an October 15 report, promising renovations would increase its combined tree and palm count to 2,400.

According to reports, that target compares with approximately 2,200 existing trees and palms, a net increase of 200.

“The golf course is devastated,” residents said in a local interview, in comments translated from Spanish. Their complaint centered on the removal of large trees.

For people living beside the fairways, that raises a practical question: how much of the mature landscape can replacement planting restore, and how long will it take?

Municipal environmental sustainability director Roberto Ornelas described it as an authorized project to replace introduced species with regional trees. He outlined a proposal to remove about 68 trees and introduce approximately 400 replacements.

The irrigation system is part of the explanation. Management links the removals to new irrigation infrastructure and says some vegetation has damaged existing facilities. Its replacement plan includes regional species and plants with less invasive roots.

Ornelas had specifically identified ficus roots as a cause of damage to irrigation pipes, which he said had left grass without sufficient water. He also described plans to replace mango trees with species including arrayán, mahogany, papelillo and tronadora.

The latest response follows earlier investment in the property. Vallarta Daily reported on the renovation of the course’s 18 greens in August 2025.

However, this year’s planting figures describe different things. September’s account discussed removals and replacements, while October’s statement gave a combined final population of trees and palms. The reports do not reconcile those figures or provide a verified tally of specimens already removed and planted. Vallarta Hoy also noted that it was seeking the permit document.

For nearby households, the size and placement of replacement trees will help determine the result. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s explanation of trees and urban cooling, vegetation lowers temperatures through shade and the release of water through leaves. Trees also provide wildlife habitat and help absorb rainfall.

A higher planting count alone therefore cannot establish how much shade will return. For example, several young trees planted in one part of the course would not immediately replace the shade a broad canopy had provided in another. Where replacements go, and how they develop, will shape the landscape neighboring residents experience.

Ornelas acknowledged in September that the replacement trees would need several years to reach a substantial size. Even if the planting target is achieved, mature greenery will take longer to return to areas where large trees have been removed.
