Meth seized in Tijuana

Meth seized in Tijuana after traffic stop in Sonoita

On Wednesday evening, around 6:51 p.m., a security convoy patrolling Calle Agua Prieta in Colonia Sonoita flagged down a gray Volkswagen Passat that had entered the lane at speed and skidded, according to state authorities. Officers say the driver’s behavior during the stop raised suspicion.

Inside the car, officers report finding a cardboard box containing 50 plastic bags with a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine. The total weight came to about 23.5 kilograms, according to detailed local reports; El Sol de Tijuana described it as “more than 23 kilos.”

The detainee was identified as Ramón Oglay “N”, 34, originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa. After the seizure, he was turned over to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) to determine his legal status and investigate the drug’s origin and destination. That handoff to federal authority is standard in high-volume narcotics cases.

The state officers involved belong to Baja California’s Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad Ciudadana (FESC). Reporting also references FESC’s rapid-reaction unit, known as FERI, which commonly leads these corridor patrols in eastern Tijuana.

Accounts in multiple outlets align on the sequence: officers saw the Passat enter a lane abruptly and skid; they pulled it over as a precaution, questioned the driver, then carried out a protective inspection. In the rear area, officers say they located the box with 50 baggies of suspected meth. The weight figure varies slightly by outlet—23 to 23.5 kilograms—but all characterize the haul as sizable for a street-ready shipment.

The stop took place on Calle Agua Prieta, in the Sonoita neighborhood, and—per one detailed account—the vehicle was headed toward the Libramiento Salvador Rosas Magallón. Those specifics help explain why patrols concentrate on this part of the city: it links neighborhood streets with fast connectors used to move goods and, at times, contraband.

Why this seizure matters in Baja California

Meth trafficking remains a central challenge along the border. Baja California has seen repeated high-impact interdictions this summer. On August 11, federal authorities announced a 1.9-ton meth and cocaine seizure at the Tijuana port of entry, underscoring the scale of the flow. In July, a separate multi-agency stop in the state netted more than a ton of meth concealed in a tractor-trailer. Wednesday’s 23-kilo case is more minor but still significant; loads in this range typically indicate distribution ready for local or short-haul movement, not bulk export.

Those significant cases provide context, not a direct connection. For this stop, the investigation now shifts to tracing supply lines, packaging sources, and intended recipients. That’s FGR’s domain, often with support from state units and the National Guard.

With the suspect in federal hands, prosecutors will test the substance, certify the weight, and seek judicial measures for crimes against health. If the forensic results confirm meth, the case file will expand to include transport details and any forensic leads from packaging. Any link to a broader network—whether retail distribution in Tijuana or staging for longer-haul movement—will shape charges and next steps. For now, authorities credit fast response and methodical procedure during the stop with keeping the shipment off the street.
