Mexico Remittances Rise 3.1% in First Half of 2026

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 3, 2026 – Mexico received $30.759 billion in remittances during the first six months of 2026, a 3.1% increase from the same period last year. Jalisco moved in the opposite direction, recording a slight decline despite remaining one of the country’s largest recipients.

The figures were released by Banco de México on Monday. The six-month total was the second-highest recorded since national remittance data began in 1995, El Financiero reported.

The recovery was driven by larger individual transfers rather than an increase in the number of payments. Mexico recorded 75.971 million remittance operations during the first half of the year, down 1.8% from 2025. The average transfer rose 5% to $405.

That pattern continued in June. Monthly remittances reached $5.472 billion, up 4.2% from June 2025 but below the $5.611 billion recorded in May. June’s total came from approximately 13 million transactions, with an average payment of $422.

Jalisco received $2.502 billion during the first half of 2026, representing 8.14% of the national total and placing it third behind Guanajuato and Michoacán. The state’s intake was approximately 0.97% lower than the $2.527 billion received during the same period in 2025, based on state-level remittance data reported from the Banxico series.

The available figures do not identify how much of Jalisco’s total reached Puerto Vallarta. Banco de México publishes municipal data separately in its quarterly state and municipal breakdowns, so the national and state totals should not be treated as city-specific estimates.

The increase in dollar transfers also does not necessarily mean recipients had more purchasing power. BBVA Research estimated that households receiving remittances had 8.3% less purchasing power in June than a year earlier, after accounting for inflation and exchange-rate effects.

Electronic transfers accounted for 99.2% of all remittances received in Mexico during the first half of the year, totaling $30.516 billion. Of that amount, 53.3% was deposited directly into bank accounts, while 46.7% was collected in cash.

The new figures represent a partial recovery after remittances to Mexico fell in 2025, ending an 11-year period of annual growth, as PVDN previously reported. The next reports will show whether larger average payments can continue offsetting the decline in transaction numbers.
