Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 28, 2026 — Construction of the Hospital Civil de la Costa has moved into deep-foundation work beside the Centro Universitario de la Costa, marking visible progress on a public hospital expected to bring advanced medical care closer to communities across the bay and surrounding mountain region.
Crews are installing 78 reinforced-concrete piles beneath the complex. The piles vary in diameter and will reach depths of up to 32 meters, according to the latest construction update.
The work follows demolition of an existing structure, earthmoving, and construction of raised embankments. Jalisco Infrastructure and Public Works Secretary David Zamora Bueno said the site was elevated to reduce exposure to flooding, an important design consideration in the low-lying area near CUCosta during Vallarta’s rainy season.
The hospital carries a projected construction cost of MXN 1.197 billion. Plans include 180 inpatient beds, 100 additional beds used in emergency, recovery and other non-inpatient areas, and 13 specialized units.
Services are expected to include adult, pediatric and obstetric emergencies, internal medicine, surgery, trauma care, cardiology, neurosurgery and intensive care. Hemodynamics, clinical laboratory and medical imaging services are also included in the plans.
The University of Guadalajara’s project presentation described the complex as a tertiary hospital combining specialized treatment with teaching and medical research. Its location next to CUCosta will allow students in medicine, nursing and related health programs to complete clinical training locally.
State planning documents place nine municipalities within the hospital’s intended service area. Those include Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, Mascota, San Sebastián del Oeste, Talpa de Allende and Tomatlán in Jalisco, along with Bahía de Banderas, Compostela and San Pedro Lagunillas in Nayarit.
That region has an estimated population of 646,380, including 314,226 people without social security coverage, according to Jalisco’s original project announcement.
One of the hospital’s most consequential additions would be treatment of complex illnesses that currently send patients to Guadalajara. Vallarta Daily previously reported that the project includes local cancer diagnosis and treatment, potentially reducing repeated trips of several hundred kilometers during extended care.
The construction milestone does not settle when those medical services will become available.
Current project information places completion in December 2027. However, Jalisco health services director Héctor Hugo Bravo said this month that an initial stage could begin operating by mid-2027. The two dates may describe different phases, but officials have not publicly explained how a partial opening would fit within the broader construction schedule.
Bravo also identified recruitment of medical specialists as the project’s principal operating challenge. The hospital is expected to offer more than 60 specialties and subspecialties, creating a staffing requirement that cannot be resolved through construction alone.
The hospital-school model is intended to build that workforce over time by allowing health sciences students to train and complete internships in the region. The longer-term aim is to retain more doctors and nurses locally instead of concentrating medical training and advanced care in metropolitan Guadalajara.
The latest construction update did not include staffing targets, recruitment dates, an annual operating budget or a sequence showing which departments would open first.
That leaves two separate milestones to watch. The installation of the foundation piles shows the hospital has advanced beyond its announcement and site-preparation stages. Opening its beds, emergency departments and specialized units will depend on equipment, operating funds and enough trained personnel being ready when the building is delivered.
