Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 3, 2026 — A waterspout formed off Boca de Tomatlán Sunday evening as storm conditions developed along Puerto Vallarta’s southern coast, prompting officials to warn that additional waterspouts could form Monday.
The funnel was captured on video from the shoreline and quickly circulated on social media. The phenomenon appeared during the late afternoon or evening off Boca de Tomatlán.
Local reports reviewed on Monday did not identify any injuries, damage, or other incidents related to the waterspout.
The coastal warning became more significant after Protección Civil Jalisco announced that weather conditions could deteriorate after midday Monday. The agency warned of moderate to heavy rain near Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes, wind gusts exceeding 56 kilometers per hour, frequent lightning, stronger waves and the possible formation of new waterspouts.
Boat operators and crews of small vessels were urged to remain away from areas where storms are developing and to follow official marine warnings. The combination of rotating winds, lightning, reduced visibility, and changing waves can quickly create dangerous conditions, even when the weather near the shoreline appears calmer.
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional forecast strong to very strong rainfall in parts of western Jalisco Monday, with possible accumulations of 50 to 75 millimeters. The forecast also included wind gusts of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour in Jalisco and waves between one and two meters along the state’s coast.
A waterspout is a rotating column of air that develops between a cloud and the surface of the water. Some remain over open water and dissipate quickly, while stronger formations can produce damaging winds and dangerous conditions around small boats.
The reports did not indicate that Sunday’s waterspout reached land. Anyone who sees another formation should avoid approaching it by boat and leave the water if lightning or rapidly worsening weather develops. Coastal activity near Boca de Tomatlán and the southern bay may be affected while the warning remains active.
