Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – A prolonged surge effect has gripped the beaches of Puerto Vallarta for nearly a week, resulting from a convergence of winter storms and tropical cyclones in the northern Pacific. Residents and tourists alike have been cautioned about the rough sea conditions, prompting authorities to maintain red flags along the coastline.
According to Víctor Manuel Cornejo López, the advisory meteorologist of the Bay Civil Protection Council, the surge phenomenon is a consequence of extratropical cyclones that have made their way into California. These cyclones bring with them a cold front that generates powerful waves affecting the Mexican Pacific coast. Cornejo López noted that the slow progression of these waves, fueled by an extratropical cyclone with a frontal zone associated with a tropical storm, has significantly impacted the sea conditions in the region.
El Niño, the climatic phenomenon characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, has also contributed to the extended surge effect. In typical years, extratropical cyclones tend to move further north, affecting the coastlines of California, Washington, and parts of Canada. However, during El Niño years, these cyclones tend to track lower, resulting in higher swells along the Mexican coast.
Cornejo López emphasized that the surge effects will gradually diminish in the coming days but cautioned that it won’t be an immediate return to calm waters. “The decrease is not all at once; it is very gradual,” he stated. While conditions may improve, beachgoers are advised to remain cautious, as the situation could potentially repeat itself. Continuous monitoring of sea conditions is recommended to ensure safety.
As Puerto Vallarta navigates through this unique weather phenomenon, both residents and visitors are urged to stay informed about the ever-changing sea conditions and heed the warnings issued by local authorities. The convergence of winter storms, cyclones, and El Niño has created a challenging environment for beach enthusiasts, underscoring the importance of vigilance during this period.
