Puerto Vallarta Bars See Weak World Cup Final Turnout

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 20, 2026 — The World Cup ended with a championship match but without the expected final sales rush for several bars and restaurants in Centro and the Zona Romántica.

Businesses that prepared screens, seating and promotions for Sunday’s Argentina–Spain final reported moderate attendance instead of the packed rooms they had anticipated, according to local reporting published Monday.

Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal in the 106th minute, according to the official FIFA match report.

The quieter afternoon in Puerto Vallarta’s principal restaurant and nightlife districts contrasted sharply with the beginning of the tournament. VallartaDaily reported that the World Cup opener filled Puerto Vallarta restaurants when Mexico began its campaign on June 11.

The difference appears to have been the team on the screen rather than the importance of the match.

Mexico won its group and defeated Ecuador in the first knockout round before losing 3–2 to England on July 5. The loss in the round of 16 ended Mexico’s tournament two weeks before the final, removing the national connection that had driven the largest local gatherings.

Earlier business expectations show how heavily restaurants were counting on that connection. Before Mexico faced Ecuador, local operators estimated that the national team’s group-stage matches had increased restaurant and bar sales by about 30 percent. Some businesses believed the elimination match could produce an increase of as much as 50 percent, according to reporting published before the Ecuador game.

By the final, businesses were selling a major international match without Mexico’s participation or the possibility of a local celebration afterward. Restaurants continued showing the tournament and offering promotions, but the remaining games did not reproduce the crowds seen while the national team was still playing.

Fans also had a free alternative outside the downtown tourism districts. The Vibra Jalisco Fan Zone operated in the Hotel Zone through July 19 with giant-screen broadcasts, entertainment and a food court containing more than 40 stands.

Jalisco officials previously reported a combined 438 million pesos in direct tourism spending for Puerto Vallarta and several of the state’s Pueblos Mágicos during the earlier portion of the tournament. VallartaDaily’s coverage of the tourism estimate noted that the figure covered several destinations and included spending across hotels, food businesses, public events and other tourism services.

The final-day experience shows why those broad totals do not necessarily describe conditions inside every restaurant or neighborhood. World Cup spending in Puerto Vallarta appears to have arrived in concentrated bursts tied to Mexico’s matches, public concerts and large fan-zone events rather than as a consistent increase throughout the full tournament.
