Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 18, 2026 – Beach vendors and semi-fixed merchants in Puerto Vallarta say the World Cup has brought movement to town, but not a clear sales lift during the tournament’s first week.
Vendors interviewed along the tourist corridor said the weekend crowd looked closer to normal vacation traffic than a new wave of soccer spending. One ambulant vendor said in Spanish that they “really haven’t had higher sales.” Another said some visitors appeared to be spending more carefully on hotels and drinks than on beach purchases.
The comments come as Puerto Vallarta promotes its World Cup viewing site near Playa Camarones. The Vibra Jalisco Fan Zone runs from June 11 to July 19, with 50 match broadcasts, a giant screen, music, Domósfera experiences, and a food area with more than 40 stands.
Crowds are not the same as sales
PVDN reviewed the official fan-zone information and current business reporting. Together, they show a familiar gap in Vallarta’s visitor economy: a busy waterfront does not mean every small seller benefits.
World Cup visitors are easiest to see in managed spaces, bars, restaurants, hotels, and viewing areas. Beach vendors work in a different part of the local economy. Their sales depend on people walking on the sand and buying snacks, souvenirs, rentals, or small services.
Puerto Vallarta’s main World Cup activity is anchored in one controlled venue. The official fan-zone listing describes free entry, with food and drinks sold separately inside the site.
Puerto Vallarta’s World Cup role is off the field
Jalisco is promoting Puerto Vallarta as one of the state’s public viewing points. A state tourism guide to World Cup viewing sites lists Puerto Vallarta’s fan zone beside the Sheraton area. It describes hours from 10 a.m. to midnight, with food, mixology, children’s areas, and 50 televised matches.
Puerto Vallarta is not hosting World Cup matches. Its role is as a beach destination where residents and visitors can watch games away from stadium crowds in Guadalajara.
Jalisco hosts Mexico vs. South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, the second of four World Cup matches scheduled at Guadalajara Stadium. The remaining Guadalajara matches are set for June 23 and June 26, according to Jalisco’s World Cup travel information.
Small businesses are still waiting for the bump
The complaints from Puerto Vallarta’s beach vendors fit the first-week pattern. National business reporting on June 17 cited Concanaco figures showing that 88.4 percent of businesses surveyed had not yet reported a clear World Cup sales improvement. Only 11.6 percent reported stronger sales, while others saw no change or declines.
Concanaco had projected up to 65 billion pesos in commerce, services, and tourism activity during the tournament. The business chamber also said the challenge is making sure that spending reaches small and family-run businesses, not only large operators and formal event spaces.
That is the local tension in Puerto Vallarta. Hotel bookings, bar tabs, official food stands, and beach vending do not experience the same benefits. A larger crowd in town can still leave some sellers waiting.
The tournament has several weeks left. Puerto Vallarta’s fan zone continues through July 19, with daily programming and larger events ahead, including the free Julieta Venegas concert on Friday, June 19.
