First 30-meter prestressed beams for Puerto Vallarta bridge construction at the Las Juntas interchange bring the project to 60 percent, promising to cut traffic delays on Highways 544 and 200.
The first four prestressed beams for the new vehicular bridge over the Las Juntas interchange in Puerto Vallarta have been set in place, marking a key milestone in Puerto Vallarta bridge construction. After four months of work, crews installed the 30-meter beams during the early morning hours to avoid peak traffic, covering the first of the bridge’s three spans and bringing the project to 60 percent completion.
Located at the intersection of State Highway 544 (Mascota–Las Palmas) and Federal Highway 200, the overpass will streamline travel between Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit. Daily congestion at this junction has long frustrated both residents and tourists, with traffic backups stretching into the resort and urban zones ⇢ where thousands of vehicles pass each day.
Each of the four beams measures 30 meters in length and was hoisted into place using specialized cranes and rigging systems. Working before sunrise minimized disruptions on Federal Highway 200, which remains open under traffic control measures. Municipal engineers say similar off-peak operations will continue as the remaining eight beams are delivered and installed in the coming days, completing the two remaining spans.
“Installing these beams is a technical advance that keeps us on schedule,” said an official from Puerto Vallarta’s public works department. “Once all spans are in place, we’ll begin the deck and railing work that drivers will see next year.”
Beyond easing local gridlock, the bridge will improve access for commercial traffic and emergency vehicles, and enhance safety by eliminating the at-grade intersection. Officials estimate the overpass will cut average travel times through Las Juntas by up to 40 percent and reduce collision risks at the busy crossroad.
Funding for the project comes from a joint state–municipal infrastructure program, with an investment of approximately MXN 200 million. Construction began in March 2025, and officials expect to complete the entire bridge by late 2025, weather permitting.
In addition to the prestressed beams, work crews have already poured foundations for the supporting piers and completed retaining walls on both sides of the highways. Upcoming phases include laying the concrete deck, installing guardrails and lighting, and landscaping the surrounding areas to blend the structure into the cityscape.
Local businesses and tour operators have welcomed the progress. “Any improvement that reduces the bottleneck here will help our day-trippers and hotel guests,” said a representative of a downtown tour company. “The sooner this opens, the better for everyone.”
Once finished, the Las Juntas overpass will stand as a modern landmark at a critical gateway into Puerto Vallarta, reflecting the municipality’s commitment to upgrading its road network and enhancing visitor experiences.
