Puerto Vallarta Maintains 26 Closures for Real Estate Developments and Restaurants Over Environmental Violations

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has 26 closures currently in force against real estate developments and restaurants for alleged breaches of environmental regulations in Puerto Vallarta, according to Profepa head Mariana Boy Tomborell.

During a recent announcement following the closure of three developments in the city, Boy Tomborell indicated that, under the previous administration, the Attorney General’s Office in Jalisco conducted 48 inspections—40 of which were directed at real estate developments and one at a restaurant. As a result of these inspections:

• 26 closures were ordered and remain in effect,
• 9 summonses were issued,
• 5 more cases await the issuance of summons, and
• 34 cases have been fully resolved.

In six of the closures, security measures were breached. Profepa has reported six cases to the Attorney General’s Office; in four of those cases, no criminal proceedings were pursued due to lack of federal jurisdiction.

Boy Tomborell also highlighted that, under the current administration, 18 inspection visits have been carried out: eight to real estate developments and five to restaurants. Profepa, alongside other environmental agencies, has been meeting regularly with municipal and state authorities as well as environmental organizations. In an effort to strengthen oversight, a broad inspection operation was launched on February 25 and continues to date.

Profepa officials reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing federal environmental legislation and ensuring that all properties, whether residential or commercial, comply with the necessary regulations. Further updates on the closures and any new measures adopted by Profepa will be disclosed as the inspection operation progresses.
