Work on Puerto Vallarta’s next-gen terminal is past the halfway mark, and the plan is bigger than new gates. GAP is investing MXN 9.2 billion to double the airport’s capacity while prioritizing sustainability—encompassing vast solar arrays, more innovative cooling systems, and water reuse. The operator is targeting LEED Gold certification and a phased opening, with the first phase scheduled to commence in 2026 and the complete opening set for 2027. If it lands as promised, Vallarta gets more flights, shorter lines, and a greener footprint in one shot.
The new Puerto Vallarta terminal has reached the 54% mark, according to operator GAP. The MXN 9.2 billion build aims to double the airport’s operational capacity as tourism grows on the bay. The design leans on energy efficiency and water reuse, with LEED Gold as the target.
What the build adds, in plain terms
The project encompasses a functional area of approximately 74,114 m² within a total construction area of 114,175 m², including 15 new aircraft positions. Border processing will also change, with 14 autonomous migration filters designed to expedite the movement of lines. Those upgrades are designed to accommodate approximately 14 million passengers per year once the expansion is fully operational.
A large solar installation—32,600 m² of panels—is planned to cover up to 80% of the terminal’s power needs. The building features solar-control glass, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and systems to collect and reuse treated water. That bundle is what GAP hopes will help the terminal achieve LEED Gold certification.
Passenger demand supports the bet. Puerto Vallarta handled approximately 6.8 million passengers in 2024, a record year, and traffic has continued to rise through 2025. More gates and larger halls alleviate the peak-season pressure that travelers experience in security, boarding, and immigration.
Timelines and the bigger picture
GAP and local press outline a phased opening in late 2026, with full use expected in 2027. Other industry coverage pegs operations to the second half of 2027, which aligns with the frequency at which major terminals undergo system and certification updates. Either way, the runway to opening is measured in months, not years.
This build also aligns with GAP’s broader investment strategy. Earlier this year, the company announced that it would invest approximately 52 billion pesos through 2029 to expand capacity across its network, including Vallarta, Los Cabos, Tijuana, and Guadalajara. The goal is to meet demand and spread out bottlenecks at Mexico’s busiest leisure gateways.
