Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Sept. 3, 2026 — Municipal police announced expanded preventive patrols in areas described as crime hotspots, but officials did not publish a complete list of the targeted sectors.
An initial report published Sept. 2 said officers established checkpoints and continuous patrols in priority sectors. Authorities attributed the deployment to recurring offenses and reported crimes.
A follow-up account published Thursday identified Centro as one of the covered areas. It did not name the other sectors classified as hotspots.
More patrols in the tourist corridor
For residents, workers and visitors, the most visible change will be additional officers in public spaces, commercial areas and parts of the tourist corridor.
A separate tourist-zone deployment identified the Malecón, Plaza de Armas, the Los Muertos Pier and the Zona Romántica among the locations receiving increased police presence.
Tourist police are patrolling public beaches on foot and using all-terrain vehicles, according to the announcement. Officers were directed to address theft, public disturbances, and alcohol or drug use in prohibited public areas.
Officials did not identify those tourist locations as crime hotspots. The tourist deployment and the broader hotspot operation were presented as related prevention measures, but not as a single published map of high-crime areas.
Our review of the available announcements found no staffing total, patrol schedule, or crime data tied to the current hotspot designations. Authorities also did not report arrests or seizures resulting from the expanded deployment.
Recent operations covered several neighborhoods
The increased patrols follow a nighttime operation conducted Aug. 30 by the municipal police Tactical Operations Group.
That operation covered Plaza La Isla, Lázaro Cárdenas Park, the park on Universo Avenue in La Aurora, and the Río Pitillal Linear Park. Officers also patrolled Las Juntas, Paso Ancho, Ramblases and Las Torres.
Police units monitored México, Francisco Medina Ascencio, Francisco Villa, Prisciliano Sánchez and Las Torres avenues. Patrols also covered the Luis Donaldo Colosio bypass.
Municipal police said officers responded to reports of fights and public alcohol consumption during that operation. Authorities reported no serious incidents before the deployment ended at about 7 a.m.
Those locations were described as busy public spaces, gathering places or preventive patrol corridors. Police did not say that every location forms part of the hotspot list announced this week.
Targeted patrols are part of an existing strategy
In June, municipal authorities identified Pitillal Centro, Emiliano Zapata, Olas Altas, Versalles and Ixtapa as commercial areas receiving additional patrols linked to higher reported crime. They did not confirm whether that earlier list remains unchanged.
The current announcement also follows increased patrols in busy tourist areas at the start of the summer travel season.
Puerto Vallarta’s 2024-2027 municipal development plan calls for expanded video surveillance and radio systems. It also proposes emergency buttons at critical locations in Centro, the tourist corridor, and areas with higher crime incidence.
Municipal police asked residents and visitors to report emergencies or suspicious activity through 911 and to follow officers’ instructions at checkpoints.
