Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the Pacific hurricane and tropical storm season unfolds, authorities in Puerto Vallarta have taken proactive measures to safeguard residents and visitors from potential hazards. The Council of Civil Protection, comprising civil, governmental, and military officials, convened to address the imminent risks posed by the rainy season in this renowned tourist destination.
During the council meeting, meteorological advisor Víctor Cornejo López delivered a comprehensive briefing, outlining the anticipated weather patterns for the Pacific Ocean. With the influence of La Niña, heightened activity is projected in the Atlantic, while the Pacific region is expected to encounter between 15 to 18 tropical cyclones. Among these, 8 to 9 are forecasted to manifest as tropical storms, with 4 to 5 potentially escalating to category one and two hurricanes, and 3 to 4 reaching category three to five status. The National Meteorological Service further anticipates the impact of at least five tropical cyclones, underscoring the need for vigilant preparation.
In response, preemptive efforts have been underway to mitigate potential risks, including the clearance and cleansing of rivers, streams, and canals throughout the city. Progress stands at an encouraging 75%, with authorities contemplating the activation of up to 17 temporary shelters capable of accommodating over 3,500 individuals should the need arise.
Acknowledging the lessons learned from previous encounters, both civil and business representatives have emphasized the importance of coordination and communication to minimize damage. Last year’s close brush with Hurricane Lidia serves as a stark reminder of the city’s vulnerability, prompting a united front in readiness.
Gerardo Castillo Andrade, the head of the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection and Firefighters, highlighted the identification of at least 22 risk areas within the municipality. However, recognizing the evolving urban landscape, ongoing assessments are being conducted to address emerging vulnerabilities.
