Puerto Vallarta Sees Surge in Air Travel with Over 3.2 Million Tourists in First Five Months of 2024

Puerto Vallarta, June 5, 2024 — Puerto Vallarta continues to thrive as a premier tourist destination, with more than 3.2 million tourists arriving by air in the first five months of 2024. This impressive figure, reported by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), marks a notable increase compared to the same period last year.

According to GAP, the Puerto Vallarta International Airport welcomed 509,800 passengers in May 2024. This represents a 3.2 percent increase from May 2023, when the airport recorded 494,100 passengers. The increase is particularly significant considering that May is traditionally considered a low season for tourism in the area.

Cumulatively, from January to May 2024, the airport recorded a total of 3,247,400 passengers. This figure reflects a 2.9 percent rise from the 3,154,800 passengers reported during the same period in 2023. The consistent growth underscores Puerto Vallarta’s enduring appeal and its robust recovery in the post-pandemic era.

Significantly, Puerto Vallarta International Airport remains the only one among GAP’s national airports to maintain passenger numbers that exceed those of the previous year. This continued upward trend highlights the city’s resilience and attractiveness to both domestic and international travelers.

Breaking down the numbers further, domestic flights brought 250,200 passengers to Puerto Vallarta in May 2024, marking a 5.2 percent increase from the 237,900 passengers in May 2023. Over the first five months of the year, domestic arrivals totaled 1,057,800, which, despite the monthly growth, is a 7.0 percent decrease from the 1,137,600 domestic passengers recorded in the same period last year.

International flights also saw an uptick, with 259,600 passengers arriving in May 2024, a 1.4 percent increase from May 2023’s 256,200 international arrivals. This segment has been a key driver of growth, with international arrivals totaling 2,189,700 in the first five months of 2024, an 8.6 percent rise from the 2,017,100 passengers recorded in the same timeframe last year.

The sustained growth in international tourism underscores Puerto Vallarta’s global appeal and the success of its efforts to attract visitors from abroad. The city’s scenic beauty, vibrant culture, and excellent hospitality continue to draw tourists, contributing significantly to the local economy.

As Puerto Vallarta looks ahead to the rest of 2024, the positive trend in air travel suggests a promising year for the city’s tourism sector. The continued efforts to enhance visitor experiences and promote the destination globally are expected to further solidify its standing as a top choice for travelers worldwide.
