Mexico’s cruise sector opened 2026 with national gains, but Puerto Vallarta did not share much of that increase. Federal figures show stronger traffic nationwide and faster growth elsewhere in the Pacific. Locally, the port’s passenger total barely rose, while cruise arrivals slipped by one call compared with last year’s first four months. The numbers add another layer to recent cruise-calendar changes and the port businesses that rely on ship days in Puerto Vallarta.
Puerto Vallarta misses most of national cruise increase
Puerto Vallarta cruise tourism stayed nearly flat during the first four months of 2026. The result came as Mexico reported a double-digit increase in cruise passenger traffic.
According to federal tourism data, the country’s ports received 4.8 million passengers from January through April. That was a 14.8 percent increase from the same period in 2025.
Puerto Vallarta did not keep pace with that. The local port received 237,368 passengers, up only 0.1 percent. Cruise arrivals fell to 75, one fewer than last year’s first four months. That was a 1.3 percent decline.
The figures left Puerto Vallarta almost unchanged, while other ports drove national growth.
Pacific ports grew faster than Vallarta
Sectur said the Pacific cruise region received 1,708,341 cruise passengers and 540 arrivals in the first four months of 2026. Those figures rose 39.9 percent and 22.4 percent, respectively.
The regional increase was not evenly spread. Puerto Chiapas posted jumps of 83.3 percent in arrivals and 80.5 percent in passengers, according to Sectur figures cited in the reports. Contralínea noted that Puerto Chiapas operates from a much smaller base than Puerto Vallarta.
Cozumel remained the country’s largest cruise port by volume. The Quintana Roo port handled 1,987,695 passengers and 571 arrivals. Its gains reached 7.1 percent in passengers and 5.2 percent in arrivals.
Meanwhile, the Gulf-Caribbean region counted 3.1 million passengers and 885 arrivals. That represented increases of 4.6 percent and 3.5 percent.
Local traffic still reaches port businesses
Each cruise call can affect a tight local network around the maritime terminal. Taxi drivers, tour operators, restaurants, vendors, and port-area businesses often see demand vary with ship schedules, passenger mixes, and time in port.
Vallarta Daily’s Puerto Vallarta cruise coverage has tracked how individual arrivals can change local activity in a single day. Recent calendar stories also showed a lighter May schedule after busier winter months, including six planned May cruise calls and two double-ship days.
The first four months of 2026 now show a narrow gap between visible ship days and year-over-year growth. Puerto Vallarta still handled substantial cruise traffic, but the passenger total barely moved while national and regional figures climbed.
February disruption remains part of local context
Contralínea reported that Puerto Vallarta’s growth would have been stronger if cruise calls had not been canceled after events on Feb. 22. The report did not give a count of those cancellations.
That chronology helps explain the local result, though it does not change the official comparison. From January through April, Puerto Vallarta ended with fewer calls than in the same period last year, with almost no increase in passengers.
For the port economy, upcoming cruise schedules will show whether the flat start remains a short-term pause or becomes a longer pattern in 2026.
