Roma Norte store robbery

Roma Norte store robbery suspects caught on escape in Mexico City

Three men allegedly tied up staff at a Roma Norte sportswear shop and tried to flee with 500,000 pesos in goods before CDMX police arrested them.

Patrol officers in Roma Norte turned a routine drive through the neighborhood into a rapid response to a violent robbery this Sunday, after spotting three men running out of a sportswear store with overstuffed plastic sacks. Moments earlier, inside that same shop, employees had been bound hand and foot with packing tape and shut in a back room while the thieves emptied shelves of branded caps, jackets and backpacks worth about 500,000 pesos in merchandise.

The officers were traveling along Sonora Street, near the intersection with Durango, in the Cuauhtémoc borough, when the men caught their attention. According to the official police account, the trio left the store at a run, each carrying large plastic bags that looked far too heavy for ordinary shopping. One officer followed the suspects on foot and radioed for backup while the other went inside to check on the business.

Inside, he found a worker struggling to peel brown packing tape from his wrists. The employee told police that three men had just stormed into the shop with knives, threatened the staff, forced them into a storage room and tied their hands and feet before looting the sales floor. Two colleagues were still in the back, trying to cut themselves free. None of the workers’ names have been released, but authorities say they have been offered medical and psychological support.

How the Roma Norte store robbery unfolded

Officers called for additional units and continued the pursuit along Sonora. A few blocks from the store, police intercepted the suspects and conducted a preventive search in accordance with protocol. Inside four large sacks, they counted 487 caps, three jackets, two T-shirts and several backpacks, all allegedly taken from the shop minutes earlier. They also seized two mobile phones, a knife and a length of metal chain with a broken padlock attached.

The three detainees are 19, 24 and 27 years old. According to the capital’s Security Secretariat, they were informed of their rights at the scene and then taken, along with the recovered goods and seized objects, to the public prosecutor’s office, which will define their legal status. For now, they are under investigation on suspicion of robbery with violence. As in every case, they are presumed innocent until a judge rules otherwise.

Back at the store, police guided the employees through the first steps of the complaint process. Staff were referred to a forensic doctor for evaluation and offered legal and psychological follow-up. Authorities have not reported serious physical injuries, but being tied up and locked in a room during a robbery is, on its own, a heavy experience. For workers in Roma Norte’s busy retail corridor, the case is a reminder that even in familiar streets, shifts can change in a matter of seconds.

Business safety in Cuauhtémoc after the Roma Norte store robbery

Roma Norte is one of Mexico City’s best-known neighborhoods for cafés, boutiques and nightlife. Most days, customers stroll down leafy streets without incident. Yet the borough of Cuauhtémoc, which includes Roma, also ranks among the capital’s areas where a large share of residents say they feel unsafe. Data from the National Urban Public Security Survey shows that more than half of adults in the borough reported feeling insecure in mid-2025, even as local authorities promote new patrols and equipment.

Officials will likely cite the swift response in this case as evidence that increased patrols are working. Police say the arrest flowed directly from preventive rounds in the area, not from a 911 call. Still, for small business workers, the story looks different from the ground level. Three men were able to enter a store in broad daylight, threaten staff with knives, tie them up and begin hauling away bags of stock before anyone outside realized something was wrong.

For employees, the priority now is to recover emotionally and get back to work in a space that feels safe again. For their neighbors, the Roma Norte store robbery is a jarring incident in a district that markets itself as relaxed and walkable. And for city authorities, it is another test of whether patrols, crime-prevention campaigns and borough-level strategies can keep pace with crimes that unfold in just a few minutes on an ordinary street.
