Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — A significant sinkhole has emerged in the Sierra Occidental region of Jalisco, posing a danger to motorists traveling on the Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta free federal highway. The sinkhole is located beneath the asphalt at kilometer 103 of Federal Highway 70, in the section corresponding to the municipality of Mascota.
The cavity was created as a result of heavy rains during a recent storm, exacerbated by a severe lack of maintenance on the roadway. The compromised section of the highway has raised serious safety concerns for drivers navigating this mountainous route.
In response to the hazard, officers from the Municipal Civil Protection Department of Mascota have joined forces with the State Civil Protection and Municipal Traffic personnel. Together, they are working diligently to delimit the risk area and prevent accidents. Barricades and warning signs have been placed to alert motorists of the danger ahead.
Authorities are urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling through this area. “We ask all drivers to reduce their speed and pay close attention to the signage to avoid any mishaps,” said a spokesperson from the Municipal Civil Protection Department.
Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes if possible and stay updated on road conditions through official channels. The collaborative efforts of the local and state agencies aim to expedite repairs and restore safe travel along this vital highway corridor.
