Transformer Blast Injures Man in 5 de Diciembre Area

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 1, 2026 – A transformer explosion in 5 de Diciembre injured a 53-year-old man Tuesday afternoon and left part of the neighborhood without electricity near Brasilia and Prolongación Bolivia streets.

The blast happened shortly before 1:00 p.m., according to the first local report from NoticiasPV. Neighbors reported a loud explosion and pieces falling from the electrical equipment, prompting a response from Tourist Police, Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Firefighters, and CFE crews.

The injured man told emergency responders he was walking nearby when a ceramic fragment from the transformer struck him in the head. Paramedics evaluated him at the scene after he reported head pain and discomfort in one ear from the force of the blast. He was not transferred to a hospital, according to the initial report, and was advised to seek medical care if symptoms worsened.

Police secured the area while CFE was notified to inspect the damaged equipment and begin repair work. The first report did not specify how many homes or businesses lost service, how long the outage lasted, or whether CFE had identified the cause of the transformer failure.

The explosion also follows another electrical emergency in the same neighborhood. On June 28, PVDN reported that a 5 de Diciembre home fire linked to an electrical short injured a man, leaving him with second-degree burns. There is no confirmed connection between the two cases, but the back-to-back incidents place local attention back on electrical infrastructure and response times in one of Puerto Vallarta’s most active older neighborhoods.

The broader electrical load in central Puerto Vallarta has already been part of a local infrastructure discussion. Earlier this month, PVDN reported on CFE plans for a new substation intended to strengthen service from 5 de Diciembre toward Olas Altas. That project does not explain Tuesday’s transformer explosion, but it does show that the central corridor’s electricity demand has become a public issue beyond isolated outage complaints.

CFE also has a formal process for customers who believe an outage, power surge, or electrical failure damaged appliances or equipment. The utility says requests must include service information and the date and time of the event, and that technicians may visit the property before issuing a technical determination. CFE lists 071 as its 24-hour phone line for questions and follow-up through its appliance and equipment damage claim process.
