Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The National Water Commission (Conagua) reported early Friday that Tropical Storm Ivo was positioned approximately 295 kilometers southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 345 kilometers southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. As of 3:00 a.m., the storm maintained maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (km/h), with gusts reaching 110 km/h, moving northwest at 35 km/h.
While the storm’s trajectory remains offshore, its extensive cloud formations are expected to deliver intense rainfall across several regions. Central, western, and coastal areas of Jalisco, along with Nayarit, could receive between 75 and 150 millimeters of rain. Colima and Michoacán face very heavy rainfall of 50 to 75 millimeters, while Baja California Sur is forecast to experience occasional showers.
Conagua issued warnings about the potential hazards linked to these conditions. The heavy rains may be accompanied by lightning and hail, which could lead to localized flooding, landslides, and water accumulation in low-lying zones. Additionally, the strong winds have the capacity to topple trees and billboards, posing risks to infrastructure and public safety.
Marine conditions are also expected to worsen. Waves along the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán could reach heights of 3 to 4 meters, while Baja California Sur will likely see waves up to 2 meters tall.
The storm is forecast to intensify into a hurricane later Friday before weakening back to a tropical storm by Saturday. By early next week, between Monday and Tuesday, Ivo is expected to diminish further into a low-pressure system.
In response to the approaching storm, the port of Manzanillo partially closed to small craft navigation early Thursday morning. The Harbor Master’s Office implemented the restriction due to rising wave heights inside the bay, aiming to protect fishing vessels and small recreational boats. This closure will remain until further notice, with authorities monitoring weather developments to decide whether to expand the restriction to other types of vessels.
Residents and mariners in affected areas are advised to stay alert and follow official updates as Tropical Storm Ivo continues its course along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
