A morning blaze inside the electrical substation at the Tulum Center building sent people pouring onto Avenida Tulum while fire crews moved in. Authorities say the alert hit just after 10 a.m. and the Tulum Center fire was contained fast, with no injuries and roughly 300 people evacuated as a precaution. Officials credit a quick response and on-site equipment for preventing a bigger problem. Tenants waited outside as power specialists inspected the system before anyone was allowed back inside.
Tulum Center fire
Cancún firefighters moved fast Thursday morning after smoke rose from the electrical substation inside the Tulum Center building on Avenida Tulum. The alert came around 10:15 a.m. from the state’s C5 system. Crews reached the site, confirmed a small blaze, and knocked it down with a dry-chemical extinguisher. No injuries were reported. Authorities evacuated roughly 300 people as a precaution while security sealed the area and checked for lingering risks.
What officials say happened
City officials say a short circuit inside the building’s private substation sparked the fire. Three fire units and eight firefighters handled the response, and a representative from the Federal Electricity Commission joined the on-scene review. Traffic slowed briefly around the block as responders worked and building staff moved people out. By late morning, authorities said damage was limited and specialists would run checks before normal operations resumed. The Tulum Center fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading beyond the substation room.
