Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 1, 2026 – The Malecón became Puerto Vallarta’s postgame gathering point Tuesday night after Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 in Mexico City, sending the co-hosts into the World Cup Round of 16 and giving the city its loudest football night of the tournament so far.
Fans wearing green jerseys and carrying Mexican flags moved onto the downtown boardwalk after the final whistle, turning the waterfront into an open-air celebration.
The celebration was not just another group-stage reaction. Mexico’s win came in the Round of 32, the first elimination test of the expanded 48-team World Cup. With first-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 and advanced to the next round without conceding a goal for the fourth straight match.
It also broke a long national frustration. Reuters reported that the victory was Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986, when the country last hosted the tournament. That history helped explain why Vallarta’s reaction moved beyond sports bars and the official viewing area and into one of the city’s most visible public spaces.
Puerto Vallarta had already been building a World Cup rhythm before Tuesday’s match. The city’s Vibra Jalisco Fan Zone in the North Hotel Zone has been operating as the official public viewing site, with large screens, music, food vendors and free admission. The official Fan Zone page lists regular hours from 10:00 a.m. to midnight through July 19, placing the venue next to the Sheraton Buganvilias and across from the Agustín Flores Contreras sports complex.
The Fan Zone has become the organized match-day venue, while the downtown waterfront remains the place where a major Mexico win spills into the street. Earlier in the tournament, PVDN reported that Mexico’s win over South Korea turned the Fan Zone into a crowd test. Tuesday’s result pushed that energy farther into Centro.
Mexico is scheduled to play again on Sunday, July 5, at Mexico City Stadium, with kickoff listed at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, or 6:00 p.m. in Puerto Vallarta. The opponent will be the winner of the England vs. DR Congo match.
