20000 Runners Took Over Mexico City for IPN’s Once K

Mexico City’s Sunday morning race calendar had a major turnout as the Instituto Politécnico Nacional held its Once K event with more than 20,000 participants. The race was part of the school’s 90th anniversary activities and included three distances, separate start times, and a children’s event the day before. Official results named winners across the 5K, 11K, and 21K races, while the turnout showed how large institutional road races remain a visible part of Mexico’s urban sports culture.

IPN Once K Race Draws More Than 20,000 Runners in Mexico City

More than 20,000 runners participated in the 18th edition of the IPN Once K race in Mexico City, according to the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. The event included 5K, 11K, and 21K distances as part of the institution’s 90th anniversary activities.

Race started early at Wilfrido Massieu

The race was held on May 24, with the Estadio Wilfrido Massieu in Zacatenco serving as a main race point. IPN said the 5K started at 6:15 a.m. beside the stadium, followed by the 11K at 6:35 a.m. from the Casco de Santo Tomás area in Miguel Hidalgo. The half-marathon began at 6:40 a.m. from Zacatenco and finished at the Politécnico stadium.

La Jornada reported that the race took place under the slogan “Un legado en movimiento” and was tied to celebrations for the school’s 90th anniversary. The newspaper said the event drew runners of different ages, including children, older adults, and people with disabilities.

A children’s race was held the day before, with about 1,200 children ages 6 to 14 taking part in 500- and 600-meter events, according to La Jornada and IPN.

Winners named in 5K, 11K and half marathon

IPN listed Naomi Tolentino Solís as the women’s 5K winner, followed by Romary San Román Hernández Martínez and Regina Robles Castillo. In the men’s 5K, Ulises Adrián Loza Cruz finished first, with David Núñez Gómez second and Uriel Romero de la Cruz third.

For the 11K race, Brandon Hernández Bárcenas won the men’s category, ahead of Axel Alejandro Árcega Arellano and Alejandro Alejandre Sánchez. Sonia Laguna López placed first in the women’s race, followed by Selene Martínez Ávila and Estefany Velázquez Rodríguez.

In the 21K half-marathon, Kathia Mirell García Barrios won the women’s category, with Claudia Ixchel Rico Hernández second and Patricia Trujillo Herrera third. Emmanuel Ángel Reyes Montes won the men’s category, followed by David Sánchez Ramírez and Darío Castro Pérez.

Mexico’s race calendar keeps growing

The IPN event fits into a wider calendar of organized races across Mexico. Vallarta Daily recently reported on the Puerto Vallarta Marathon, expected to draw more than 3,000 runners, and the Yucatán Marina Marathon, which is being promoted with expanded race options for 2026.

Mexico City also hosts one of the country’s best-known road races, the Mexico City Marathon, where the altitude and urban course remain part of the event’s identity.

The Once K race was organized by IPN and Canal Once, according to the institution. IPN described it as one of its main sports events and part of the activities marking both Día del Politécnico and the school’s 90th anniversary.
