San Miguel Tribute Honors a Migrant Advocate’s Work

San Miguel Tribute Honors a Migrant Advocate’s Work

A tribute for Jorge Navarrete Olalde brought together emergency agencies, officials, relatives, and community members to recognize a life tied to migration, rescue work, and cross-border support. Navarrete, a Guanajuato native associated with Casa Guanajuato in Cleburne, Texas, was remembered for years of work with Mexican migrants and emergency services. The ceremony also pointed to how his family plans to continue that work.

Emergency groups and relatives remember Jorge Navarrete

Emergency agencies, local officials, relatives, and community members paid tribute to Jorge Navarrete Olalde, a Guanajuato migrant advocate known for supporting rescue groups and Mexican communities in the United States.

The ceremony recognized Navarrete’s work with migrants, firefighters, paramedics, civil-protection groups, and the Red Cross. Family members received acknowledgments from participating rescue agencies and organizations.

Navarrete was remembered as a figure who helped connect migrant communities abroad with needs in Guanajuato. His work included support for emergency institutions and projects for Mexican families living abroad.

A life tied to migration and rescue work

Navarrete was originally from Comonfort, Guanajuato, and later became connected to Mexican migrant organizing in Texas. He was known as the president of Casa Guanajuato in Cleburne, Texas, and as one of the founders of Team Fénix, an organization linked to support for rescue teams.

Reports on his death said he spent more than 30 years working with municipalities to obtain rescue equipment. Much of that work involved equipment no longer used in the United States but still useful for emergency groups in Mexico.

His support also reached public institutions. In 2013, the University of Guanajuato reported that migrant groups helped secure a mobile medical unit for its health sciences work. That same event also included equipment for fire departments and Red Cross delegations in Guanajuato.

Tribute followed his death in April

The tribute was held a little more than a month after Navarrete’s death was reported in April. The ceremony included a minute of silence and a final roll call, accompanied by sirens from ambulances and rescue vehicles.

Emergency groups from Guanajuato and other areas took part. Reports named agencies from Morelia, the State of Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, Comonfort, and other municipalities, as well as participants connected to cities in the United States.

State migrant official Susana Guerra Vallejo also took part in the recognition. She described Navarrete as a native of Guanajuato who continued to defend and support his home state while living abroad.

San Miguel and Cleburne ties continue

The tribute also reaffirmed the relationship between San Miguel de Allende and Cleburne, Texas. That connection has been part of the wider network of migrant and civic work associated with Navarrete.

At the end of the event, Antolín Navarrete, Jorge Navarrete’s son, said he would continue the work by assuming leadership roles connected to Casa Guanajuato and Team Fénix.

The recognition placed Navarrete’s work in two connected areas: support for Mexican migrants abroad and help for emergency institutions in Guanajuato.
