A Canadian was arrested in the tourist town of Tulum, in the Mexican Caribbean, for his alleged involvement in the murder of a police officer, state authorities announced Tuesday.
The arrest of the Canadian, identified as Patrick “C”, occurred after an incident that happened the day before in the town of Francisco Hu May in Tulum, where municipal police officers went to verify the report of an attack with a firearm carried out by the alleged assailant against a vehicle, the Quintana Roo state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.
The State Prosecutor’s Office reported that without just cause the Canadian fired a firearm at the municipal police, shooting one in the face, who later died of injuries at the hospital.
After the attack, the Canadian entered his home and set it on fire, and then left the place. In the midst of this situation, police officers used firearms to contain the alleged aggressor who was wounded by a bullet in the leg and was transferred to a hospital in Playa del Carmen where he remains hospitalized as a detainee, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
Last June, a Canadian couple was murdered in a timeshare apartment in the Riviera Maya. According to the authorities, the man was wanted for fraud and would use different names.
In January of this year, there were shots fired inside the Xcaret Mexico hotel, also in the Riviera Maya, where two Canadian tourists were killed and one more was injured.
