PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The sweltering temperatures sweeping across a large part of the country has triggered a marked increase in demand for ice, resulting in supply difficulties in the metropolitan area of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas, according to reports from consumers and suppliers.
María Cuevas, a local restaurateur, said, “There hasn’t been a shortage yet, but it is more difficult for suppliers to keep us supplied.”
The current heatwave, which has seen temperatures climb above 36 degrees and heat indices reach 40, has sent the demand for ice soaring.
The Puerto Vallarta-Bahía de Banderas Metropolitan Security and Commerce Alliance (Amesyc) reported record-breaking water sales alongside the surge in ice demand. María Guadalupe Vázquez Solís, a member of Amesyc’s workgroup, revealed that water sales have risen by up to 45%.
The extreme heat has driven a surge in ice demand at convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants, taquerias, and self-service stores, as well as among tourists and locals, leading to supply shortages.
“Ice suppliers in the region just can’t keep up. Shortages are being reported from Puerto Vallarta to Compostela and, of course, in Bahía de Banderas too,” added Vázquez Solís.
As the heatwave continues, the people in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas brace themselves for possible further difficulties in securing supplies of ice. Meanwhile, water sellers are experiencing a booming business in these blistering conditions.
