As Mexico’s top beach destination, Puerto Vallarta is setting an impressive pace for the recovery of the tourism industry. Despite the tumultuous global events, the city saw a surge in its tourism sector in the first half of 2023, outperforming all other beach destinations in Mexico, including Cancun, Los Cabos, and Acapulco. This growth, according to Luis Villaseñor, the director of the Public Trust for Tourism Promotion and Advertising in Puerto Vallarta, can be attributed to high hotel occupancy rates, a boost in both national and international traveler arrivals, and the successful diversification of its tourism offerings.

In the first six months of 2023 alone, Puerto Vallarta experienced an average occupancy rate of 79.01%, a figure that surpasses pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, a 3% tax on lodging generated 70.4% of the projected revenue within this period. Further highlighting Puerto Vallarta’s growing popularity, the city’s international airport reported an annual growth of 17.4% and 17.1% in national and international travelers respectively, showcasing the global appeal of this sun-soaked destination.

Investments in local infrastructure have also played a significant role in Puerto Vallarta’s success. Over 30 million pesos were allocated to the first stage of remodeling the Puerto Vallarta International Convention Center, which has already hosted 31 confirmed events with a total attendance of 80,651, contributing an estimated 13 million dollars to the economy.

Efforts to diversify the city’s tourism sector have also been well received, expanding beyond the traditional “sun and beach” offerings to include medical tourism, romance, pet-friendly activities, and LGBT tourism. Furthermore, Puerto Vallarta continues to capitalize on its geographical advantages, excellent connectivity, range of outdoor activities, and security to attract a broader spectrum of visitors.

However, Villaseñor highlighted that there are still challenges to face, particularly in aligning with markets that are attracting tourists, specifically Latin America. Additionally, perceptions of insecurity in the country, despite Puerto Vallarta being a safe destination, can affect visitor numbers, as foreign tourists make up 55% of the total tourist population.

Yet, with continued dedication and strategic planning, Puerto Vallarta is well-positioned to retain its title as Mexico’s leading beach destination and to broaden its appeal to a more diverse range of tourists.
