The issue at hand is the attempted eviction by an individual seeking to claim 10 hectares of land – currently houses approximately 170 families, a square, and the local schools.
As the calm waves lapped the shore of Mismaloya, protesters stood firm in their resolve. “We are not going to move until we have good news. We are not affecting anyone; we are demonstrating peacefully, but we demand that the president of the republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, give us justice; he promised us when he came here to the town,” said one impassioned protester.
According to the locals, the disputed land, a sizable 10 hectares, is being claimed by an individual without any proof. Residents claim that the case is brimming with irregularities and emphasize their rich history and connection with the land. Spanning three generations, the people of Mismaloya have cultivated a vibrant community, acting as the founding figures of the town.
