Puerto Vallarta Under Hurricane Watch as Tropical Storm Lidia Approaches

PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – Tropical Storm Lidia has triggered a hurricane watch for areas of west-central Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta, according to the latest updates from meteorological agencies. The storm is located near latitude 18.4 North and longitude 112.1 West, moving northeast at approximately 5 mph (7 km/h). The system is predicted to accelerate in a northeastward to east-northeastward direction later today and Tuesday.

Strengthening Forecasted, Landfall Imminent

Maximum sustained winds around the storm’s center are at 65 mph (100 km/h), with gusts potentially higher. Current forecasts indicate that Lidia will intensify into a hurricane before approaching Las Islas Marias and the western coast of Mexico. The storm is expected to move inland over west-central Mexico by Tuesday night. The wind field associated with tropical storm-force winds extends outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center, with the estimated minimum central pressure standing at 992 mb (29.30 inches).

Hazards Affecting Land

Rainfall from Lidia is anticipated to produce totals of 4 to 8 inches, with localized maximum amounts of up to 12 inches through Wednesday across the state of Nayarit, southern parts of the state of Sinaloa, and coastal areas of Jalisco. These conditions are likely to result in flash and urban flooding and potential mudslides in elevated terrains near the coast.

A dangerous storm surge is also predicted, which is expected to cause significant coastal flooding near and to the south of the point where the storm’s center makes landfall. Large and hazardous waves will accompany this surge. Winds are forecast to reach hurricane strength in the warning area by Tuesday, and preparations to protect life and property should be expedited. Tropical storm conditions are also anticipated to affect areas under Tropical Storm Watch by Tuesday.

Surf and Rip Current Risks

Lidia-generated swells will affect the west coast of Mexico and the Baja California peninsula for the next several days. These swells are highly likely to produce life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Residents and tourists are advised to consult updates from local weather offices and take necessary precautions immediately.
