Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — A grave incident unfolded on the Cuale River in Puerto Vallarta when a 69-year-old boatman, identified as Francisco Hernández, was fatally carried away by the river’s strong current into the sea. Hernández was a resident of Manuel M. Diéguez Street in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood of the city.
Local neighbors initially alerted the authorities to the unfolding tragedy. A 911 call was placed reporting that a person had fallen into the river. Responding to the emergency, Civil Protection and Firefighter units quickly arrived at the mouth of the Cuale River, where they discovered Hernández floating in the sea next to a boat. The boat’s owner had managed to secure the body with a rope while awaiting the arrival of rescue personnel.
Lifeguards on the scene immediately executed necessary protocols, securing the corpse in a boat named Viento Negro and transferring it to the Los Muertos dock. Upon arrival, Red Cross paramedics performed standard checks for vital signs and could only confirm the tragic outcome—the death of Francisco Hernández.
Following the confirmation of death, the rescuers alerted the staff of the State Prosecutor’s Office and the Forensic Medical Service. The agencies took charge of retrieving the body and will transfer it to their facilities, where it will subsequently be turned over to the family for final rites.
According to area neighbors, Hernández had ventured to the Cuale River to collect water for his household, highlighting an alarming issue: a lack of water supply in the region that residents have been grappling with for days.
