Hurricane Norma Intensifies to Category 4, Posing Severe Risks of Heavy Rain and Flooding in Puerto Vallarta

PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – As of 9:00 am Central Time today, Hurricane “Norma” has evolved into a formidable Category 4 hurricane, according to meteorological data. The storm is currently located 655 km south-southeast of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, and is expected to impact a wide range of regions in its path significantly.

The hurricane is exhibiting maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h, coupled with gusts reaching an alarming speed of up to 260 km/h. It is progressing at a moderate pace of 11 km/h and is charting a northward course. Initial forecasts suggest that Hurricane “Norma” is slated to make landfall in the Los Cabos area of Baja California Sur this coming Sunday. Post-landfall, the system is expected to veer towards the coast of Sinaloa.

Anticipated Rainfall and Flooding Concerns

With the passage of the hurricane, several areas are under immediate threat of severe weather conditions. Regions expected to be impacted include Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Durango. The meteorological authorities are warning of heavy to torrential rainfall, which may lead to a variety of flood-related hazards. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution due to potential sudden flooding, increased water levels in rivers and streams, and the overflowing of water bodies. Coastal and urban areas are particularly susceptible to flooding under these conditions.

A designated Hurricane Effects Surveillance Area has been demarcated, marked by a pink line, covering the entire southern portion of Baja California Sur. The area extends from Todos Santos to Los Barriles.

Recommendations for Those in Risk Areas

For those located in risk-prone zones, adherence to the following recommendations is strongly advised:

  • Avoid proximity to river and stream beds due to the risk of sudden flooding or overflow.
  • In the event that evacuation becomes necessary, residents should be aware of COVID-19 preventative measures when relocating to shelters.
  • If living in an identified risk area, consult Civil Protection units or dial 911 to request information about temporary shelters.
  • Conduct any necessary repairs to home structures, including ceilings, windows, and walls, to mitigate further damage. Ensure drains and roofs are clear of debris.
  • Prune surrounding trees and bushes, as these can be dislodged and propelled by the hurricane’s winds.
  • Secure any loose objects around the property that could become airborne during the storm, such as television antennas, signs, and hanging objects.
  • Prepare an ‘Emergency Backpack’ containing essential items.
  • Important documents should be safely stored in the ‘Emergency Backpack,’ either in physical form or as digital copies saved to a USB drive or emailed to a personal account.

Residents are urged to stay abreast of updates from official channels and adhere to all issued advisories and warnings. Preparedness and caution are of the utmost importance in mitigating the risks posed by Hurricane “Norma.”
