Protest Erupts in Puerto Vallarta After Death of High School Student, Traffic in Centro Blocked

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Relatives and friends of José Luis Cabrera, a third-year high school student who allegedly died as a result of a beating, took to the streets of Puerto Vallarta this Monday morning in protest. The demonstration, which saw roads surrounding the municipal presidency blocked, called for justice and a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.

Beatriz Cabrera, the mother of the deceased, is demanding that the State Prosecutor’s Office expedite its investigation into the matter, asserting that her son disclosed the names of his attackers before passing away. She insists that swift action is needed to bring those responsible to justice.

The protest began near the Agustín Flores Contreras sports complex, with participants marching towards the city center. Upon arrival, they blocked two major streets—Morelos and Juárez—both of which run adjacent to the municipal presidency. Among their demands were calls for the resignation of the city’s mayor and an accelerated investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office.

According to Beatriz Cabrera, the motive behind her son’s attack stemmed from his talent in soccer. She stated that her son was targeted by three individuals because he excelled at the sport and was due to participate in upcoming games.

“He was very good at football and wanted to be a professional footballer,” said Cabrera. She expressed the pain of losing her son, emphasizing that justice is crucial for her family’s peace. “I want justice for my son. They attacked him to stop him from playing.”

The protest, which has drawn significant attention, continues to impact local traffic, particularly in the main square of Puerto Vallarta. Hundreds of motorists have been affected by the blockade, and the situation remains tense as demonstrators show no signs of dispersing.

As the protest unfolds, the city’s authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the demands for the mayor’s resignation or the status of the investigation. However, pressure from the community is mounting, with many calling for transparency and accountability from local officials and law enforcement.

The case of José Luis Cabrera has resonated deeply with Puerto Vallarta’s residents, many of whom see the incident as a reflection of a broader issue of violence among youth in the region. Concerns over the safety of young people in public spaces and the role of authorities in preventing such tragedies have come to the forefront, with protests expected to continue if demands are not addressed promptly.

Beatriz Cabrera, speaking through tears, has become the voice of a growing movement seeking justice, not just for her son, but for the families of all victims of violence in the area. She hopes that her son’s case will lead to meaningful change and prevent future incidents.

At the time of publication, the streets of Puerto Vallarta remain blocked, with demonstrators steadfast in their demands. All eyes are on the State Prosecutor’s Office as the community awaits updates on the investigation, hoping for swift justice and accountability for José Luis Cabrera’s death.
